Sr. Magdalene Nehwati, one of the pioneer sisters of the Missionary Daughters of Calvary in
Zimbabwe has died at the age of 77. Sr. Nehwati was born on 09 September 1946 in St. Mary’s Lukosi and she died on 21 May 2023 at St. Patricks Hospital, Hwange. Sr. Nehwati is among the four African Pioneer Sisters to join the Daughters of Calvary Sisters. She did her novitiate in Spain from 1967 to 1969 before she took her first profession on 15 September 1969 and her final profession in 1975.
Her first assignment was in Tsongokwe Mission. She also worked in other places such as St. Mary’s Mission, Nembudziya Mission in Gokwe, Sacred Heart Mission and St. Ignatius Cathedral.
For some time, she was the Provincial Superior of the Daughters of Calvary in Zimbabwe. She is the co-founder of Lubancho, a humanitarian organization that helps underprivileged members of the community with skills development in Hwange Diocese. Between 2011 and 2017, Sr. Nehwati worked in Mozambique before she joined the Tshongokwe community which has been her home until the time of her death. Sr. Nehwati was buried at Chezhou cemetery on 24 May 2023 amid eulogies of gratitude for a well lived life.
